The Whole Ball of Wax

The Whole Ball of Wax by Jerry Saltz expresses the unique impact art has on our world. Sure it can't "change global warming" or "halt the spread of AIDS," but Jerry Saltz shows the reader how impactful, art really is. Art is special because although it may not change the physical world, it can have a large impact to those on it. Its importance is just as great as science, politics, and etc. Saltz mentions that one should not force the understanding of art, but should accept it as it is. Art is to be an experience you go through not an equation to solve. Art can be anything you want it to be. Saltz mentions how it can heal and allow people to escape from reality.
I agree with many of Saltz reasoning’s about art. I also agree it is truly important for our society and culture. Art has been with us since the beginning; just as hand prints on cave walls. Art changes us, which changes the world. It was a very confusing piece to read and hard to get a good grasp on but the overall message was received. Saltz writing style is very much like art. You do not need to have full understanding to receive the message. Art impacts our world in different aspects but it is needed. Because after all “Art is not optional; it is necessary. It is part of the whole ball of wax”. And also is a cat.

  1. It's funny how you mentioned cave paintings right before we went over them in class. I agree with your interpretation too

  2. I like how you said that Saltz's writing style is very much like art. I agree that this piece was confusing at times. Art can be very difficult to interpret, just as his article was.

  3. I really like your statement, "Art changes us, which changes the world." Art allows us to learn about different cultures and understand and appreciate perspectives other than our own. If everyone was as accepting as they are when viewing different art pieces in every day life, then this world would be tremendously different.

  4. I liked your statement, "Art changes us, which changes the world." I like that you sort of worked in reverse to come to that statement; taking what Saltz says and putting your own spin on it. I also enjoyed, something I had never thought about, how Saltz writing technique is also a form of art. I too was confused and it's cool how we all interpret his writing differently like how we do other forms of art. Well put!

  5. I really like how you compared the way that Saltz wrote to art. At first I struggled reading this article, but after going through it a couple of times I started to understand it. Also, he referred to a lot of different pieces of art, and it wasn't necessary to know anything about the pieces to understand the writing.
